Do you remember the first time you saw a rhino? I do.
I must have been about four years old when I watched a National Geographic documentary about the animals of Africa. My eyes were round and my jaw hung loose as I watched tall, long-necked creatures, striped horses and large grey animals with long noses wander across the screen. And then came the rhino with a horn on its head, just like the unicorn doll I loved to play with. For me, that hour was nothing short of life-changing.
What were those strange and beautiful creatures I’d seen, and where could I find them? For me, it was an awakening of just how big and beautiful our world is. It ignited a desire in me to see and experience as much of the world as possible.
That desire has stayed with me over the years. Unfortunately, not everyone looks at these animals with awe and appreciation. In fact, in some parts of the world people look at rhinos as a source of money and hunt them for their horns.
The problem is so big that illegal poaching threatens to wipe out the species entirely. On average, a rhino is poached every 7 hours. The situation is critical and current predictions suggest they will be extinct in the wild within 20 years if the current poaching rate continues.
There’s still time to save the rhinos – and you can help!
Rhinos Without Borders is working to save rhinos by translocating 100 from South Africa to Botswana where poaching is virtually non-existent. The project is being spearheaded by Great Plains Foundation founders Dereck and Beverly Joubert– National Geographic explorers in residence, acclaimed wildlife photographers/ filmmakers, and conservation advocates famous for their work in saving Africa’s big cats.
In support of their efforts, Travelers Building Change and Green Travel Media, along with over 120 travel bloggers and a number of extremely generous sponsors are looking to raise at least $45,000 to support #JustOneRhino. In return for your donation, you’ll have the chance to win an amazing prize! The fundraiser is open until the very end of February and prize winners will be announced on March 3rd to mark World Wildlife Day.
