4 ways to find romance in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter [Tips & Video]

May 15, 2013 By Rebecca Leave a Comment

Just steps away from Birmingham City Centre, lies a veritable “lovers lane” in the heart of England.  Birmingham`s Jewellery Quarter is perhaps Birmingham’s most romantic district.  Here are my four favorite romantic excursions for the area:

Write a love letter at the Pen Room Museum. Tucked away in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter lies the Pen Room Museum.  This veritable treasure trove of all things related to pens was set up to commemorate and educate people on the role Birmingham manufacturers played in creating mass produced pens, which would improve the development of education and literacy worldwide.  So much so, that by the mid 1800s, more than half of the world’s supply of pens came from manufacturers in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

As well as being the go-to place for anyone interested in the history of penmanship, the museum also runs weekly calligraphy classes, making it an ideal place to pen a love letter.

Picnic at St Paul’s Cathedral. This pretty cathedral in the heart of St Paul’s Square was once the center of worship for the Jewellery Quarter’s merchants and manufacturers. Famous attendees at St Paul’s included James Watt, inventor of the steam engine and individual after who the unit of power the “watt” is named after, and Mathew Bourne, an inventor and manufacturer who helped establish Birmingham’s Assay office; they even had their own pews at the church.

Still an active church today, St Paul’s is now a pretty haven from the bustling city in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Go dancing and romancing

Take your special someone for a night on the town at one of Birmingham’s hottest clubs, Jools Holland’s live music venue, The Jam House.  Although it’s rare to see an appearance from Jools himself, the venue hosts some of the regions best musical talents, which are guaranteed to see you busting a move.   This place is hugely popular and regularly sees hour-long queues around the corner for anyone who fails to show-up early enough.  However, the trick could be to simply indulge in dinner at the venue before the grand show.

Design your own engagement ring

There’s no better place to custom-design an engagement ring than here! With Europe’s largest concentration of jewelry-related businesses, the Jewellery Quarter is brimming with expertise on how to design the perfect gift for your loved one. Take some time to explore the various jewellery workshops in the quarter; each is individual and has it’s own charm. ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Rebecca!
For as long as I can remember, I've dreamed of adventure and rebelled against the idea that life should follow some sort of pre-determined path. That's why, at the age of 18, I moved half-way around the world from Canada to the UK in search of new experiences. Since then, I’ve lived in three countries and travelled to nearly 20. My goal is to experience as much of the world as I can and to lead a location independent lifestyle. This blog will document my journey and, hopefully, inspire you to achieve your own goals.
